April 4,1978 Young Quaker Violinist to Perform at Guilford The final performance of the I 1977-78 Arts Series at Guilford i College will be a violin concert I by Erika Klemperer on Wed- I nesday, April 12 at 8:15 p.m. > in Sternberger Auditorium. Admission is free to all Guilford ! Students, faculty, staff, and i other Arts Series members. Erika Klemperer is a young i Quaker artist whose visit is of special interest to many at ' Guilford College. She grew up 1 in Richmond, Indiana, where her father, the late George Klemperer, a gifted violinist, I was her first teacher. Many Guilford faculty and staff have long-standing friendships with the Klemperer family from Richmond and Earlham College. Erika played solo with the Richmond Symphony Orches tra at the age of eleven. After graduating from Indiana University in 1972, she received an M.A. in chamber music from Sarah Lawrence College in 1974. Following an audition by Yehudi Menuhin, she was accepted as a student of Mr. Menuhin as well as of Yfrah Neaman in London, two of the most gifted violinists and teachers of this age. Erika has given numerous recitals in London, York, Birmingham, Oxford, and in the United States in Chicago, New York, Indianapolis, New Haven and at many colleges. While on their year's leave in England in 1976-77, Mel and Balloting Begins for Faculty/Student Excellence Awards Whom would you like to receive the 1977 Senior Excel lence Award, and which two faculty members would you nominate for the Excellence in Teaching Awards? The Board of Visitors is again sponsoring two SSOO awards to be given to two full time professors for their recognized excellence in teaching. In previous years the recipients have been Ed Burrows, Richie Zweigenhaft, John Grice, Sheridan Simon, Dick Morton and Jerry Godard. Last year the Board of Beth Keiser delighted in hear ing a superb performance by Erika Klemperer at the Chapter House of York Minster which was given in aid of the Royal College of Organists, an occa sion on which they renewed an acquaintance of 14 years earlier. It was through the recommendation of the Keisers that Erika Klemperer will now perform at Guilford College. Gordon Back will accompany Erika Klemperer on the piano. Mr. Back was born in Wales and studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music. He then won a scholarship to study in Italy and was also an international prize-winner in a competition in Barcelona. (bottom row) Annette Byrd, Bobbie Jones, Virginia Wagner, and Bonnie Pratt. concentrating on chamber music and accompaniment, Gordon Back plays regularly for Master Classes of Yehudi Menuhin and Yfrah Neaman, is the official accompanist for the Carl Flesh International Violin Competition, and is a Professor at Guildhall School in London. He has played regularly on BBC broadcasts and has given numerous concerts in England, Bulgaria, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Finland.
